The Welcoming Center to Launch Toolkit That Helps Employers Successfully Integrate Immigrants Into the Workplace

The Philadelphia non-profit will be hosting an employer-focused event to launch the toolkit

June 10, 2021 – Philadelphia, PA – The Welcoming Center is launching its Engaging Immigrant Talent toolkit next Thursday, June 17, 2021, at a virtual event. This launch comes after an intensive 18-month study made up of interviews, focus groups, and roundtable discussions, with employers, immigrants, and workforce development practitioners. The conversations examined how to develop more inclusive hiring practices and create a culturally competent work environment for successful immigrant integration into the workplace.

The toolkit aims to help employers understand the steps they must take to recruit, retain, and promote immigrant talent. Director of Employer Engagement at The Welcoming Center, Rochelle T. Cooks, said, “As our nation looks towards an equitable economic recovery, The Welcoming Center’s Engaging Immigrant Talent toolkit provides practical steps to successfully incorporate immigrants into the talent cycle of the U.S. workforce.”

The City of Philadelphia Commerce Department’s Office of Workforce Development also played a key role in the development of the toolkit. Deputy Commerce Director for Workforce Development at the City of Philadelphia Department of Commerce, Heloise Jettison, said, “The Engaging Immigrant Talent employer toolkit is an excellent model and ‘tool’ for employers to understand, self-challenge, and implement a truly inclusive and diverse culture of workforce.  Particularly, we are excited about how it will assist our small and medium sized local employers in Philadelphia.”

The Engaging Immigrant Talent toolkit was made possible by a generous grant from the World Education Services (WES) Mariam Assefa Fund. “Employers have a significant role to play in supporting the success of immigrants and refugees in the workforce,” says Monica Munn, managing director for philanthropy at WES. “As a funder focused on building an equitable economy where immigrants and refugees can thrive, the WES Mariam Assefa Fund is thrilled to see this culmination of The Welcoming Center’s efforts. This new resource provides employers with tangible, proven actions to create more inclusive workplaces and tap into the potential of immigrant talent – which is needed now more than ever as the economy begins to recover and businesses rehire.”

The toolkit launch event will be held virtually on June 17, 2021, from 1 to 2 p.m. EDT and is open to all employers and HR/DEI professionals. Attendees can expect to hear from key stakeholders, speak with their peers, and learn how to access the toolkit. For more information about the event and to register, go to bit.ly/eittoolkit.

The toolkit will be available to download on The Welcoming Center website after the launch event at welcomingcenter.org/employers.
