Shirin Karsan: Our 2024 Solas Award Honoree

  Written by Megan Johnson

This year, The Welcoming Center is very pleased to honor Shirin Karsan with the 2024 Solas Award. Meaning “Light” in Gaelic, The Solas Award honors those who tirelessly shine their light towards the darkest corners, a light that gives hope to those who search for justice, dignity, and peace in a new and strange land. Shirin is an unwavering advocate for global peace, with an inspiring dedication to the promise of American pluralism and democracy. She builds bridges, breaks down barriers, and promotes peace both locally and globally.

Shirin holds a Master’s in Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania, is a Fulbright scholar, and was appointed Chair of the Pennsylvania Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs under Governor Tom Wolf. She now chairs the Peace Action Network, a global organization with 35,000 members in 140 countries. She is the first woman and first non-member to be elected as Chair. She is a published author and TEDx speaker, a nationally certified bioethics trainer, a mentor to young women, and a trained and practicing mediator. Shirin’s remarkable achievements and dedication make her an inspiration for the work we do at The Welcoming Center, and we are honored to present her with this esteemed award.

Her involvement with the Welcoming Center stems from her deep affection for the support it provides to immigrants like herself. Her volunteer work has been an inseparable part of her story in America, driven by a desire to help immigrants overcome barriers and thrive in their new homeland. Shirin herself puts it like this:

“If only there had been an organization like The Welcoming Center when my family and I arrived here – dedicated, committed, and ready to support immigrants through their most daunting challenges. It’s a lifeline for those who’ve left everything behind, facing uncertainty and language barriers. Knowing there’s someone saying, “We are here. We can help you,” is monumental. For me, volunteering with the organization was a no-brainer. I’m here to help in any way I can.”

In many ways, Shirin’s immigrant story is a testament to the American Dream. But for Shirin, the dream was never just about personal success; it was about ensuring her children had access to education and to opportunities while navigating a new culture. Her path to integration has been about intentional learning and adapting to a new way of life. She brings an incredible curiosity with her wherever she goes, always looking to connect and engage with her environment. Shirin has a remarkable ability to understand and evolve with the culture around her, without surrendering her gift as a peace-seeker and change-maker. Shirin’s impressive professional and educational achievements, her global perspective, and her kindness are cherished contributions to our community

“When we lack inner peace, it reflects in our families and communities. If immigrants struggle, how can we understand their challenges? It begins with us; cultivating peace within creates a ripple effect, fostering harmony in our communities. Amid global conflict and polarization, nurturing inner peace is vital.”
