Natasha Smirnova: Welcoming Stories
Written by Emily Chaff
Hello there! I’m Natasha, hailing from the enchanting and chilly city of St. Petersburg, Russia. A creative soul with a passion for exploring, I wear multiple hats as a photographer, designer, and AI trainer. Not too long ago, my adventurous squad consisting of myself, my youngest son Max, and our loyal dachshund Kyzia moved to Philadelphia. When I first arrived in Philadelphia, I was very unsure of myself. I didn’t know how to behave, where to find friends, or even how to dress. I was very afraid of seeming Russian, of being different. Being in a new country with limited English skills can be tough, but The Welcoming Center helped me.
My experience at The Welcoming Center started with English language courses that I found here and, after that, I participated in other programs. I met people from different countries, learned to be part of the community, and organized events to help other immigrants. My team created an event called “Way to Philly Home.” It was heartwarming to see people coming together and helping each other.
I keep returning to support TWC because I want to lend a hand to people like me by attending new programs, joining events, and offering help whenever possible. I help however I can, as an immigrant, a photographer, and a resident of Philadelphia. I want others to feel the same support I received. I learned at TWC that in America, you need to be yourself, carry your culture, and be proud of it. This changed my perspective and made me more confident.
The Welcoming Center has helped me become a part of this culture and country. I want to help others overcome their fears and barriers. Being involved has given me confidence and peace, helping me start my journey and work towards my goals in this new country. I really want to help other immigrants who are facing these challenges right now, to guide them through this journey and start living in a new country with a sense of joy and confidence.
